There is good news for those of you mothers who breastfeed your baby. Based on research, nursing mothers the possibility of type 2 diabetes later in life is lower than mothers who did not breastfeed.
Scientists say that breastfeeding helps convert fat left around the abdomen after giving birth, one of the factors that cause disease.
They believe that the decline in breastfeeding rates in the western world could help explain the explosion of type 2 diabetes among middle-aged women. The results published in the "American Journal of Medicine" on Saturday (28 / 8). The study involved 2333 women aged 40 to 78 years.
"Diet and exercise are widely known to affect the risk of type 2 diabetes. But few people realize that breastfeeding also reduces the risk of developing disease later in life by reducing abdominal fat, "said Dr. Eleanor Schwarz of the University of Pittsburgh, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
In the study, a quarter of breast-feeding mothers who did not develop type 2 diabetes and susceptibility to the disease was nearly two times greater than women who are breastfeeding or never given birth.
Women who breastfeed all their children likely to develop diabetes similar to women without a child.
Previous research conducted by the same team found that breastfeeding mothers can maintain a heart attack and stroke later in life.
Breastfeeding for a month lowered the risk of getting diabetes by 10 percent, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, all play a role in causing heart disease, compared with women who never breast-feeding.
"Our study provides another good reason to encourage women breastfeed their babies, at least during the first month of life the baby. Doctors need to consider pregnancy and lactation history when giving advice to women about the risk of type 2 diabetes, "added the doctor Schwarz.
